The Amstelveen Line, formerly tram line 51, is an important public transport connection between Amsterdam and Amstelveen. The former light rail vehicles were overcrowded and outdated, while traffic safety no longer met modern standards. To ensure a reliable connection between Amsterdam and Amstelveen for the future, the Amstelveen Line was extensively upgraded.
The conversion included the renewal and major maintenance of tracks, switches, overhead lines and technical systems. The intersections at Kronenburg, Zonnestein and Sportlaan were converted into grade-separated crossings with sunken track sections. Four stops were removed, two were merged, and all remaining stops were renewed. A new tram storage facility was also constructed in the Legmeerpolder.
The upgrade has resulted in a more reliable tram service, allowing trams to operate faster and with fewer delays. The project also delivered safer and more comfortable stops, improved traffic safety and better traffic flow.
Overall, the renewed Amstelveen Line has improved accessibility throughout the region and provides passengers with modern, comfortable trams and a fast and convenient interchange at Amsterdam Zuid station.
CI-Engineers modelled the civil engineering structures for the stops and the three grade-separated intersections in Revit 3D, from preliminary design through to final design.
