The Westrandweg formed part of the first phase of the A5 motorway development near Amsterdam. The initial section of the A5 starts at the De Hoek interchange (A4 connection), near Schiphol Airport, and runs with two lanes in each direction through the Rolbaantunnel beneath a Schiphol Airport taxiway to the Raasdorp interchange (A9 connection). With a total length of 19 kilometres, the A5 serves as a bypass around Amsterdam and now extends northwards from the Raasdorp interchange to the Coenplein interchange (A10 connection).Construction of the initial Westrandweg extension began in 1999 and was completed in 2003.

CI-Engineers' engineering team was responsible for the structural calculations and engineering drawings for both the substructures and superstructures of the viaducts at the two interchanges.
In addition, CI-Engineers carried out the complete structural engineering and detailing of the 150-metre-long Rolbaantunnel, including the tunnel box structure. This tunnel allows aircraft to taxi between Schiphol Airport's Polderbaan runway and the main airport facilities.
