Project RijnlandRoute - CI-Engineers

Rijnlandroute

PROJECT description

Part of the RijnlandRoute project involves the development of the N206 ir. G. Tjalmaweg, an important east-west connection in the Holland Rijnland region.

The project section extends from the N206–N441 intersection in the west to the Torenvliet Bridge in the east. The road is largely constructed below ground level, with several access connections crossing the route.

The project broadly includes the design, construction and maintenance of the following infrastructure:

- Widening the existing road from one to two lanes in each direction (2×2) and upgrading it to a major through road, with most of the route constructed in a partially sunken alignment.
- Constructing a second, fixed Torenvliet Bridge with three traffic lanes alongside the existing bridge, including modifications to the waterway profile.
- Converting the existing Torenvliet Bridge into a fixed, non-opening structure.
- Constructing two grade-separated junctions (Valkenburg II and Valkenburg III).
- Preparing the road infrastructure for a future dedicated high-quality public transport (HOV/R-net) bus lane along the southern side.
- Constructing a roundabout at the junction with Voorschoterweg.
- Developing a high-speed cycle route and landscaped park zone along the northern side of the road.

Role of CI-Engineers

CI-Engineers was involved in the detailed design for construction of structures KW06, KW03 (pumping chamber) and the park bridges, with a particular focus on optimising the detailed engineering design.

During the design optimisation process, extensive use was made of 3D simulations to resolve complex structural detailing. SCIA Engineer software was used to optimise and simplify reinforcement details, improving the efficiency and constructability of the designs.

Our structural draughtsman Danny shares his experience:
I really enjoyed completing the detailed design in collaboration with structural engineer Sander. The photograph was taken from Hofvlietweg, shortly after construction of the structure had been completed. It shows the civil structure and asphalt pavement in their purest form, which, in my opinion, is the perfect moment to capture a photograph!

I am currently still working on the as-built documentation for the civil engineering and infrastructure works, which I hope to complete in February.
