The renovated N31 provincial road connects Amsterdam with Leeuwarden via the Afsluitdijk and Harlingen. The road is being rebuilt to improve access to Friesland. On top of that, the new road will be safer and improve the flow of traffic in and around Harlingen. The new N31 is set to become a two-lane dual carriageway with five new viaducts and will largely be recessed in the landscape in an open basin 5 metres below ground level.
In the new situation, the road crosses Harlingen’s Van Harinxmakanaal by means of an aqueduct, making long waits at the Koningsbrug a thing of the past. A multi-level intersection has been created with the railway line, with the tracks crossing the N31 road. CI-Engineers took care of the implementation design for the viaducts, as well as the drawings for the pump cellars.
