Amstel Hotel Quay Wall Stabilisation

PROJECT description

The City of Amsterdam is faced with a large number of quay walls that were not designed to withstand today’s increased loads. The condition of many bridges and quay walls is unknown, as is the extent of the loads they can still safely withstand. Private owners who, according to the land registry, own quay walls are responsible for maintaining these structures.

An investigation is currently being carried out into the condition of the quay wall behind the Amstel Hotel, where sinkholes have recently been identified. These may indicate that soil has been washed away beneath the structure.

The contractor will most likely fill the void beneath the quay wall foundation with Buoycrete, a solution developed by Boskalis. Buoycrete is an innovative lightweight grout mixture with high compressive strength that is effectively weightless underwater. Once the void has been filled, the quay wall will be stabilised and the immediate risk of collapse will be eliminated.

The work required for this method can be carried out from the water, meaning only limited working space is required. The use of Buoycrete also offers several other advantages:
- Accessibility can be maintained
- No dewatering or pumping is required
- No vibration-inducing works are necessary
- Existing, including monumental, trees can be preserved
- The historic character of the location is retained

Role of CI-Engineers

CI-Engineers acts as an intermediary between the client and the various parties involved in the investigation and execution of the works, including the contractor. Through this coordinating role, we contribute to creating and maintaining a safe living environment.
