The Second Coen Tunnel project consists of a new tunnel underneath the North Sea Canal, next to the existing Coen Tunnel dating from 1966, as well as the expansion of existing viaducts and the construction of newly designed viaducts. The entire project forms part of Amsterdam’s A10 motorway.
The aim of the Second Coen Tunnel project was to reduce the daily traffic congestion around the Coen Tunnel on the A8 during the morning rush hour and on the A10 West during the evening rush hour. This was intended to significantly improve accessibility to Amsterdam from the northern part of North Holland.
Construction started in 2009. The tunnel and associated viaducts were opened to traffic in 2014.
CI-Engineers’ employees contributed to the preparation, development and verification of the detailed design for both straight and skew integral viaducts within the project.
